PLANS The challenge is great, but the rewards are even greater. The first class I took at the truly excellent, truly great University of California at Berkeley, just before the hippie invasion degraded that utopian paradise, was "Introduction to Political Science 101." In the first lecture (which was, believe it or not, taught by a full tenured professor and not by some bored Asian graduate student!) the professor asked if we knew the first principle of government, the worldwide principle which is the foundation of every form of government, whether it is American democracy, Communism, the divine right of kings, Islamic theocracies, or plain vanilla dictatorships? We gave all sorts of answers, all wrong. The professor repeated that it was the principle on which every form of government is based, and without which no government can continue to exist. We were totally confused. The professor finally made the revelation which at first fascinated me, and like most students to whom great truths are revealed, I tucked it away deep in my subconscious as I was distracted by the myriad wonderful discoveries which overwhelm young minds at great universities. I did not recall it until I posted my Renewable Energy Petition on the web at www.franksheros.org and was dismayed at the effort required to get even a tiny percentage of the people who visited and read the first page to make a second click to download, sign and mail the petition. That petition is for a law to require renewable energy at every gas station in less than five years. If passed it would stamp out Muslim terrorism, greatly reduce the trade deficit, and spur the greatest economic boom in America since after World War II. But for a long time the American public could not take the trouble to print, sign and mail the petition, even though it is free for them and of overwhelmingly tremendous benefit to our nation. And then it struck me like the kick of a mule! I suddenly recalled that brilliant Berkeley professor from almost half a century ago. You see, his first principle of government without which no government could continue in power is "APATHY!" No matter how great the issues, regardless of the media coverage, even on the rare occaisions when the media get it right, for all of 5,000 years of recorded history, every government known to man has been based on the apathy of the populations. And that is the problem with American education. 20,000 books and nobody is willing to do what is required. Bandaids, baby steps, talk, talk, talk, write books, but apathy rules.
